Preschool and kindergarten – learning beginning sounds

Beginning sounds!

It’s the first step towards learning to read a language. Distinguishing beginning sounds from the rest of the word prepares your child to read and write.

I have designed this particular phonics sound set keeping our preschoolers and kindergarteners in mind. Our little learners can practice phonics sound a-z in this set.

Children have to say the name of each picture to determine which one begins with the target sound. Then the child will match the picture to the alphabet sound in the middle.

These 27 worksheets are colourful and also including tracing the letter activity for each letter. I believe this is the perfect resource to make learning beginning sounds absolute fun!

No preparation is required to practice these pages. A picture name cheat sheet for parents and teachers is included in this resource.

For preschoolers particularly, I try and stress more on the beginning sounds initially specially when it comes to vowels. Just stay a little longer with the beginning sound as compared to the rest of the word when you find the child confused.

Beginning sound /qu/ match

Regarding the sound ‘qu’, I have made two worksheets ‘qu’ and ‘q’ since sometimes ‘q’ is used instead of ‘qu’.

I personally use ‘qu’ but I find that schools mostly teach the ‘q’ sound instead of ‘qu’.

‘q’ however makes no sound on its own.

‘q’ and ‘u’ come together to make the sound /kw/

Beginning sound /x/ match

In the above worksheet which is for the ‘x’ sound, we match the pictures that have the ‘x’ sound in the end like boX, siX, waX, foX, fiX and oX. There is no word that begins with the sound ‘x’ so in order to understand the sound, we try and make the child hear it in the end.
