Long vowel sound ‘o’ – oa ow
What are long vowels?
Long vowel is used to refer to the vowel sounds whose pronunciation is the same as its letter name.
Long vowel sounds are also called ‘alphabet sounds.’ They are called long vowel sounds because we hold them longer than short vowel sounds. But long vowels are not a longer version of short vowels. Long and short vowel sounds are completely different from each other.
Let’s take an example. Hear the sound of the vowel ‘o’ in the word ‘bot.’ It is the short vowel sound /o/.
Now hear the sound of ‘oa’ in the word boat. It makes the alphabet sound of alphabet ‘o.’
Both sounds are completely different from each other. If you stretch the ‘o’ in bot, you do not get the ‘oa’ in boat.
Hear the sound of vowel ‘o’ in ‘on.’ Now hear the sound of ‘ow’ in ‘own.’ On has the short vowel ‘o’ sound and ‘own’ has the long vowel ‘o’ sound.
