These are the five vowels in the English language. But they represent a variety of sounds. To master these vowel sounds, first and foremost we have to learn the difference between short vowel and long vowel sounds.
We have already covered the short vowels. Today, we shall discuss long vowels which are relatively easier for children to learn compared to short vowels.
What are long vowels?
Long vowel is used to refer to the vowel sounds whose pronunciation is the same as its letter name.
Long vowel sounds are also called ‘alphabet sounds.’
They are called long because we hold them longer than short vowel sounds. But long vowels are not a longer version of short vowels. Long and short vowel sounds are completely different from each other.
