In the English language there are eight different parts of speech. All the words in the English language can be classified under these eight parts of speech.
The eight parts of speech are:
It is important to understand these eight parts of speech to form sentences which are coherent as well as grammatically correct.
In this post, I will be sharing a word sort activity for ‘nouns verbs adjectives’
Print out the ‘nouns verbs adjectives’ umbrellas and the raindrops. If you are looking to use them in a classroom setting then print these sheets on card stock and laminate them for durability.
I tried this activity individually with a first grade child and used normal A4 sheets.
Cut the 30 raindrops along the dotted lines and sort them under ‘nouns verbs adjectives.’
A noun is a person, place, animal or thing. Paste the noun drops on the noun umbrella sheet. You can download free ‘noun worksheets and resources’ here.
Verbs are action words. Paste the verb drops on the verb umbrella sheet. You can download free ‘verb worksheets and resources’ here.
Adjectives are describing words. They provide information about a person, place, animal or thing. Paste the adjectives drops on the adjectives umbrella sheet. You can download free ‘adjectives worksheets and resources’ here.
Have the children use this recording sheet to record the ‘nouns verbs adjectives’ raindrops. There are two sheets for raindrops which can be practiced separately. Each sheet has 10 nouns, 10 verbs and 10 adjectives.
This activity is a fun way to practice and revisit the parts of speech and also discriminate among them.
I have prepared practice worksheets for discriminating among nouns, verbs and adjectives. It will complement this activity well.
Nouns, verbs and adjectives can be confusing when they come together. The best way to differentiate among them is to use the word in a sentence.
