Common nouns name people, places, animals and things that are not specific. They are not the actual NAMES of people, places, animals or things.
For example, ‘jam’ is a common noun, but the name of the jam, ‘Nestle’ is not a common noun because it names a particular brand of jam.
In the same way, ‘railways’ is a common noun, but ‘Indian Railways’ is not a common noun because it names a specific or particular railway.
Colours is common noun but ‘Staedtler’ names a particular brand of colours and therefore not a common noun.
City is a common noun but ‘New York’ is not a common noun because it names a specific city. When we name something specific, it is a proper noun.
