These phonics beginning sound mats are a perfect resource for preschool, kindergarten and homeschool to practice various beginning sounds together.
These beginning sound mats are a hands-on tool to practice identifying beginning sounds. It is a much loved activity in my classroom.
Just lay a beginning sound mat and let the child identify one picture at a time. Say the beginning sound, find it and then place it over the picture. These beginning sound mats also reinforce letter recognition.
There are 5 mats in all. All mats have 12 pictures beginning with different sounds. The above 2 mats have pictures with the beginning sounds a b c d e f g h i j k l. So, these mats can be used once the first 12 sounds of the alphabet have been completed.
Print out these mats on card stock and laminate them for durability.
I used lowercase magnetic letters for this beginning sound activity. I really like these letters since there are 100’s of activities that can be done with these. I bought them from here.
You can also use scrabble tiles instead of the magnetic letters. You could collect mineral water bottle caps and write letters on those and use those caps for this activity.
This ‘build the sight word’ is another activity for which I used these lowercase letters. You can check the ‘Build the sight words’ pack by clicking on the above image.
In case your child is still not ready to use the alphabet mats and you are looking to practice the sounds individually, check this space. I have ‘a-z beginning sound starter packs’ which are a great resource for introducing beginning sounds.
