Teaching phonics word families helps beginning readers read simple words. A word family is basically a group of words with the same sound pattern. Words belonging to one family are also rhyming words.
Let’s look at the image above. In this short vowel word family, the last two letters are the same for all words. It is the ‘ap’ family. Map, tap, nap, gap and cap all belong to the same word family ‘ap.’ Also, all the words rhyme with each other. All we have to do is change the first letter to form a new word. This helps the child understand patterns. ‘ap’ is common for all the five words but a change in the beginning sound changed the word and its meaning. Understanding patterns enables fluency. Children are not required to sound out each individual letter but instead be able to recognize the pattern quickly.
These fun phonics word family cards will make learning word families a fun activity. The child has to identify the picture and then add the beginning sound to the word family to form the word.
These word family card or strips are perfect for beginners. Cut along the two vertical lines and you will have 3 phonics word family strips. There are 27 word families in all along with pictures. There are 5 words for each word family. In all, there are 135 words that your child will learn in this activity.
Print out these phonics word family cards on card stock and cut them into strips. Since these word family cards will be used heavily, you can laminate them for durability. If card stock is not possible, try 100 GSM A4 sheets like these.
I used lowercase magnetic letters for this phonics word family activity. I really like these letters since there are 100’s of activities that can be done with these. I bought them from here.
Once the children are finished with this activity they can write the word families they have created in their notebooks.
This is a wonderful activity to do once the children have completed beginning sounds.
